Pipe installation will close West Hill Road

in Tioga County

Weather permitting, a maintenance crew in Tioga County will begin a pipe installation project on Route 2022 (West Hill Road) in Putnam Township this week.

Rail freight projects get state funding

On Aug. 15, Gov. Tom Corbett announced that 39 rail freight improvement projects that will help sustain nearly 34,000 jobs across Pennsylvania were approved for funding from two PennDOT-managed programs.

“Transportation is a proven economic driver and these investments will help these companies maintain and create more jobs,” Corbett said. “Ensuring that these facilities and assets are ready to meet consumer demands is vital to keeping our state competitive.”

The State Transportation Commission voted Aug. 14 to approve nearly $35.9 million for 13 projects through the Rail Transportation Assistance Program and 26 projects through the Rail Freight Assistance Program. The former is a capital budget grant program funded with bonds and the latter is underwritten through the new Multimodal Fund.

The Rail Transportation Assistance Program provided $4.3 million to install cross and switch ties, renew several crossings, install bridge ties and other track work for RJ Corman Railroad Group PA Lines in Cambria, Clearfield, Clinton and Indiana counties.

The Rail Freight Assistance Program provided funds for the following projects:

In Bradford County, $697,417 to install 1,800 feet of track, a new switch, two conveyors and a track scale for Northeast Freight Transfer Inc.

In Bradford and Wyoming counties, $353,500 to rehabilitate, raise, line and surface rail sidings at the Wyalusing Terminal for Lehigh Railway LLC.

In Centre County, $250,000 to complete improvements including track and turnout construction, upgrading rail and installing drainage for SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority.

In Columbia County, $250,000 to relocate and replace a turnout, construct 1,600 feet of track and install a grade crossing, for Autoneum North America Inc.

In Lycoming County, $224,000 to construct 800 feet of track providing new rail service at the Montoursville facility, for Jersey Shore Steel.

In Union County, $250,000 to construct a turnout, 500 feet of track as well as improvements for offloading rail cars, for Heller’s Gas Inc.

PennDOT posting weight limit on Cummings Creek Road

PennDOT is advising motorists in Tioga County that a road will be posted with a permanent, year-round, 10-ton weight restriction.

Route 4027 (Cummings Creek Road) in Middlebury, Farmington and Nelson townships will get the weight restriction along its entire length, from Route 249 to Route 49.

The posting is being made on the basis of a traffic-and-engineering study indicating that this highway may be damaged by the use of vehicles that exceed the restriction.

School buses and local-delivery trucks are exempted from the postings.

The posting will take effect as soon as the required signs are erected. A PennDOT maintenance crew is scheduled to place the road posting signs on Aug. 29.

Pipe replacements planned on Route 973

A PennDOT maintenance crew in Lycoming County will close a section of Route 973 in Anthony Township for six pipe replacements.

Route 973 will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day from Monday, through Sept. 2.

A detour will be in place using Daugherty’s Run Road, Route 3023 (Kiess Hill Road) and Quenshukeny Road.
